Honoring Senator Christopher J. Mega

Street Naming Ceremony

“Senator Christopher J. Mega Way”

What a glorious day on the morning of Saturday, October 15, 2016 for the street naming of Senator Christopher J. Mega. The corner of 80th Street and 10th Avenue in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, was bustling with the people that loved and respected Senator Mega.

The tone of the morning was set by the beautiful soprano voice singing our National Anthem by the very talented Diana Marie Paunetto.

All attendees, including Republican District Leader and Assembly Candidate of the 46 Assembly District, Lucretia Regina-Potter and Republican District Leader of the 49 Assembly District, Stephen Maresca, had nothing but praises for the deceased Senator Mega who represented our community, not only as a N.Y. State Senator, but also as an Assemblyman and a Judge.

Madeline Mega, his wife and their children and grandchildren were visibly moved by the many public officials attending the ceremony, and good words that speaker after speaker were saying about Christopher Mega.

Great credit must be given to the hardworking and dedicated Staff of Councilman Vincent Gentile. They did a great job preparing for and organizing the event.

Councilman Gentile created some puzzlement for the many attendees because he invited some people to speak about Senator Mega who had never met the great Senator. Many interpreted the presentation of these unknowledgeable speakers to be more like a political display than homage to a great man. Nonetheless, the noticeable shortcomings of certain speakers did not impede upon the great impact Senator Mega made upon the community in his lifetime.

The highlight of the event was when Former New York State Assemblyman Arnaldo A. Ferraro, who was warmly welcomed and greeted by many old friends and colleagues, proudly presented Madeleine Mega with a Resolution recognizing the month of October as Italian Heritage and Cultural Month in New York State.

This resolution had a special significance since both Senator Mega and Assemblyman Ferraro passed this Resolution simultaneously in the New York State Legislature in 1985. Madeline Mega was thrilled and very pleased to receive such an important and historic document, which once more exemplified the extraordinary career of her husband Christopher J. Mega.
